A slightly tartier version can be made using 12 strand rope. You form a loop then bury one end into the other part of rope for an appropriate distance then bring it out and tie the two tails together with a diamond knot (or some other bulky knot, I think I did mine with a diamond knot). This gives a loop that can be slid wider to put the knot end through, then is pulled tighter around the stopper when under tension.
